it's interesting to note that raw (2/18/02) drew mainstream media attention mostly because the rock challenged hogan to a match at wrestlemania.

personally, i thought raw was the best episode in a long while, mostly because of the parking lot attack that the nWo launched on the ambulance that the rock was in...

when was the last time we saw major vehicle destruction on wwt television? uhh... was it when austin was driving the forklift (was it a forklift?), and he lifted hunter's car into the air, and then dropped him some 20 feet?

it brought back memories, though. especially the time that the "dX bus" got bashed.

well, they finally did it. after what seems like years of rumors and speculation, edge and christian split.

was that not one of the best in-ring turns in a while? i mean, i saw it coming from a mile away. from the end of christian's match where he lost against the rock, you could see that he had a far-off look in his eye, and he was going to do something desperate and callous.

and i knew it was going to be something big.

although, i thought they might throw all of us a swerveball, and have christian re-enact the "hawk attempts suicide" angle. remember that one? the legion of doom's "hawk", after being replaced by droz, and under the influence of drugs (which, according to the storyline, where given to him by droz...) climbed the titantron, and then "fell".

and if christian had tried it, he might have not fallen down the backside. i mean, after some of the bumps that christian has taken in the various ladder matches he's been in these last 3 years or so, falling off the titantron onto a rigged area wouldn't be much different. i mean, shane-o-mac does that stuff all the time.

christian could have made it mean something.

anyhow, i'm rambling.

but i thought the e/c split last night went well.

even as christian stood over edge's prone body, and walked towards the back, he seemed like a different person.

it's going to be a great opportunity for him, and edge, to round out their characters, and try something new for a change.

ladies and gentlemen, the era of awesomeness is over.

WWF Smackdown taping results
theMAYHEM.com
Posted by Aaron Rift on 8/01/01

Thanks to Josh Boreston for these results:

-- Smackdown starts off with Kurt Angle coming down to big pop and he starts talking about how USA is a free country and so he is free to kick Stone Cold's ass. Lance Storm comes down with a Canadian flag and insults the U.S. and Angle. He then challenges Angle to a match later that night and gives him the superkick.

-- Chuck Paulmbo and Sean O'Haire defeated the Hardy Boyz after Palumbo came in and nailed Matt with a superkick allowing O' Haire to get the pinfall.

-- Austin and Debra arrive and she has cookies!!!! Shawn Stasiak approaches them and tells Austin how much he looks up to him. Austin tells Stasiak he thinks hes a great athlete and member of the alliance but then when he leaves he asks Debra who the hell that was.

-- DDP is shown in a hotel room in DC with a ton of pictures of Sara talking about how he is sick and Sara is her cure...very strange.

-- Kane beat Chris Kanyon via DQ after Nick Patrick called for the bell for no apparent reason. Patrick got a chokeslam afterwards.

-- Y2J, Edge, and Christian all share a laugh when they encounter Stephanie making fun of a zit on her chin she says they will be sorry later in the night!

-- Austin is in the coffee room and enjoys some of Stacy Keibler's cookies.

-- Here comes the Rock.......IF YA SMELLLLLLLL........Rock comes down to the ring makes it clear he is in the WWF and is still the people's champion and calls out Austin. Booker T comes out and says Rock just can't call out the WWF Champion when he feels like it and challenges the Rock to a match at Summerslam. The Great One just simply HUMILIATES Booker T acting like he doesnt know him and claiming it doesn't matter what his name is. Shane comes out and says the alliance never needed the Rock and tells him he better respect the WCW champion. Rock makes some more fun of Shane and Booker T and Shane challenges him to a street fight on RAW. Rock accepts and everyone leaves.

-- Stephanie pyches up Rhyno and the Dudley Boyz to kick Jericho and E&Cs asses.

-- Debra and Austin start to fight because he will eat Stacy Keibler's cookies but not hers, Lance Storm comes in and Austin wishes him luck against Angle.....very funny

-- Rhyno and the Dudleyz beat Y2J, Edge, and Christian after Rhyno nailed Jericho with a gore while he had a Dudley in the walls of Jericho.

-- Debra comes out and passes around her cookies to fans at ringside and they all tell her they taste great. Asutin comes out and takes away the microphone from Debra, tells her to shut up and tells Kurt Angle he accepts the match at Summerslam. Debra then nails her husband with the cookie plate and storms off, leaving Austin pleading for forgiveness and eating cookies in the middle of the ring.

-- Kurt Angle made Lance Storm tap out to the ankle lock in a very good match.

-- William Regal and Tajiri are wondering where Undertaker is......

-- Undertaker comes in and asks why the match is nontitle, Regal tells Taker to ask Booker T to make it a title match.

-- Booker T tells Shane he will put the title on the line to prove something to the Rock, the Rock sees this from another screen......

-- Booker T and Undertaker end in a no contest after tons of interference from Shane causing the Rock to come out and lay the smack down on him. This brings out Paulmbo, O' Haire, Mike Awesome, and Raven.....all of whom Taker and Rock lay outside the ring. There were several near falls in this match despite al the interference but eventually the ref was bumped and Booker T just left the ring.

Show ends.

Afterwards (off TV)
Rock and Undertaker taunt the alliance members making fun of them to the crowd and they each come back to the ring one by one just to get beaten down again....eventually Shane comes back in and gets the last ride and rock bottom and the people's elbow.

A great show with a lot more talking then wrestling, Rock is hilarious and looks still in tiptop shape.

Biggest Pops
1. Rock
2. Angle
3. Hardyz and Lita
4. Kaientai
5. Jericho and Edge and Christian

Biggest Heat
1. Booker T
2. Shane
3. DDP
4. Stephanie
5. Paulumbo and O' Haire
WWF Invasion Results
Posted by Aaron Rift on 7/23/01

Report by LWN:

Opening montage…WWF/WCW-ECW footage paired up with World War II footage…

The show opened with Lance Storm and Mike Awesome in the ring. Storm said tonight would be a defining moment in the history of the business, all of which… Out came Edge and Christian.

Edge & Christian d. Mike Awesome & Lance Storm
Awesome and Christian started off. Awesome slammed Christian into the buckles and hit shoulder thrusts. Edge quickly tagged in, only to be double-teamed by Storm and Awesome. Edge took over on Storm after a boot to the face and followed with a missile dropkick. Edge catapulted Storm over the top rope and to the floor, on top of Awesome. Christian blew a spot going over the top rope, getting caught in the ropes. He fell on Awesome and Storm anyway. Storm battled back by catching Christian on the top rope, but Christian had an answer for it. He threw Storm off the top. Awesome became involved and crotched Christian while he was still up top. With the referee not looking, Awesome worked over Christian outside the ring.

Storm threw Christian from the middle of the ring into the ringpost. Hard shot. Awesome tagged and hit a splash. The WCWECW team used quick tags and isolated Christian in their corner. Christian looked as if he was going to get a tag, but Awesome cut the opportunity by taking out Edge. Awesome hit the big splash off the top. Christian kicked out after Edge broke the count. Up top, Awesome went for a powerbomb but ended up getting back body dropped. Hot tags were given to Storm and Edge. Edge unleashed, beating Storm from pillar to post. Storm rolled up Edge and got the pin, but the referee wasn't in position to count. Jawbreaker by Storm, and a tag to Awesome. Edge rolled out of a suplex attempt. Edge speared Awesome but Storm broke the count. Storm superkicked Edge. Christian took care of Storm. Awesome covered Edge and he kicked out.

Awesome went for his running powerbomb on Edge, but Christian caught him with a spear to win.

Backstage, Vince McMahon celebrated the win. William Regal entered the room and told Vince that Stone Cold and Debra had arrived. Vince told Regal to give Austin some space. Regal called Raven a toerag for challenging him. Vince encouraged Regal to act like George Washington in the Revolutionary War.

Special Guest Referee: Mick Foley
Earl Hebner d. Nick Patrick
Each referee had their peanut gallery of other referees at ringside. Earl jumped in the ring upon arriving and Foley had to keep both men apart. Patrick slapped Hebner. Hebner went nuts and pushed Patrick into the corner for a two count. Patrick hit a series of punches. Outside, Foley had to separate the other referees. Hebner pumped in more punches until Patrick hit a low blow. All the WCW referees attacked Earl, leading to the big brawl you expected… Foley ordered the WCW refs backstage. Patrick got pissed that all the WCW guys were sent back and not the WWF refs. Meanwhile, Earl hit a spear and won!

After the match, Patrick argued with Foley. Foley punched Nick and gave him the mandible claw with Mr. Socko…

Backstage, Debra poured coffee everywhere. Sara Undertaker asked her if she was okay, and Debra said she was. Sara said DDP was a psycho pervert. Debra and Sara concurred that nothing would be left of Page after tonight.

Non-WWF or WCW Tag Team Championship match
Acolytes d. Chuck Palumbo & Sean O'Haire
Palumbo and O'Haire sprinted to the ring, wasting no time in starting the brawl. O'Haire went after Faarooq on the outside while Bradshaw handled Palumbo inside. The Acolytes took an early lead by beating the hell out of the WCWers. Soon, the match settled down with Bradshaw suplexing Palumbo. O'Haire jumped in to even things up, and he took the edge. Faarooq tagged in and hit an elbow smash for a two count. O'Haire flipped out of a Faarooq powerbomb attempt and isolated the Acolyte in his corner. Palumbo orchestrated a double-team.

Later in the match, Bradshaw caught a nice fall-away slam on Palumbo. O'Haire jumped in with a heel kick in what was a generally disorganized brawl. O'Haire threw Faarooq into the steps while Palumbo distracted the ref. Hot tags were given to Bradshaw and Palumbo. Bradshaw gave Palumbo a powerslam but missed the clothesline from hell. O'Haire ran in and hit a superkick. Superkick on Faarooq by Palumbo, but out of nowhere, Bradshaw spiked Palumbo with the clothesline from hell to win.

Backstage, Vince told Chris Jericho that WCWECW was getting annihilated. Jericho said he had been in all three companies, and determined that Paul E. Heyman was psycho. He said the "E" in his name stood for "ewwwww." Vince said after tonight, team WCWECW would never be the same a-g-ain.

Backstage, Stephanie pissed about how she hated Jericho. Shane told Kidman to take X-Pac out. Paul Heyman entered and said they were losing, and it was up to Kidman to regain the momentum.

Non-WWF Lightweight or WCW Cruiserweight Championship match
Kidman d. X-Pac
X-Pac with some new ring attire… Both men locked up and X-Pac out-wrestled Kidman to the mat. A cocky X-Pac locked on a headlock. Kidman got out and did the same actions X-Pac had done moments earlier, out-wrestling him to the mat. Kidman hit a hurricanrana followed by an enziguri kick, knocking X-Pac to the floor. The match was all Kidman until X-Pac lowered the top rope, causing Kidman to fall outside.

X-Pac went up top and hit a dropkick from inside the ring out. With Kidman back inside, the X-Pac-kick-o-rama began with the spinning heel version. Pac put on a sleeper. Kidman fought out with elbows and locked on a sleeper of his own. X-Pac suplexed his way out and went to the top rope. Pac missed a flip-splash type thing. Momentum began building Kidman's way as he hit a modified powerbomb to get a nearfall. X-Pac called for the X-Factor, but Kidman countered into a face slam. Kidman went up top himself but fell into the X-Factor! Great move! Kidman kicked out.

X-Pac hit Kidman's foot while attempting a bronco buster. Kidman went third rope again and hit the shooting star press to win.

Heyman, Stephanie and Shane celebrated finally posting a win on the board. DDP came in the room and got a pep talk. Page revealed he couldn't say "inaugural."

Raven d. William Regal
Regal hammered away at Raven with closed fists. He hit Raven with a double arm suplex, causing Raven to fall to the floor. Regal followed and remained on top of Raven. Raven took a catapult into the top rope and to the floor. Regal hit several throat thrusts as the crowd fell dead…

Raven got in the match, finally, after hitting a baseball slide dropkick. Raven placed Regal in a chinlock. Textbook suplex by Regal, but Raven hit a shoulder block and flew off the top with a forearm shot. He followed with a running bulldog. Tazz ran down while the referee attended to Raven on the floor and gave Regal a suplex. Raven hit the Raven Effect to win.

Backstage, Vince told Undertaker and Kane not to hold back during the main event… Vince went over the line by mentioning Sara, prompting 'Taker to slam Vince against a wall.

Shawn Stasiak, Hugh Morrus & Chris Kanyon d. Big Show, Billy Gunn & Albert
Team WCW attacked the WWF from behind, but the WWF slammed each man to the mat. Kanyon worked over Gunn with punches and a sunset flip. Gunn bridged the sunset flip into a cover of his own. Stasiak entered and caught a neckbreaker from Gunn. Albert tagged and everyone ran in the ring, causing chaos. Albert hit Stasiak with a Baldo Bomb but didn't get the win.

Gunn re-entered and hit the Fameasser on Morrus. More chaos. Anyway, Morrus got the win after pinning Gunn. Post-match, Show chokeslammed Morrus, Stasiak, and Kanyon…

Backstage, Shane told Booker T that WCWECW was up 4-3 counting Chavo Guerrero's win on Heat. Booker said he would take down team WWF tonight in the main…

In Commissioner Regal's office, Tajiri poured him some tea. Regal entered and told Tajiri to pull apart that toerag Tazz…

Tajiri d. Tazz
Tajiri stormed the ring, only to be ripped apart by Tazz early. Tajiri found his chance to attack and hit several knife-edge chops, followed by a kick to the face. Tazz hit an underhook suplex. Tajiri hit an onslaught of about ten thousand kicks, to which Tazz stood up and knocked Tajiri on his ass.

Tajiri continued with the kicks but they had minimal affect on Tazz. Tazz locked on an armbreaker, and Tajiri made it to the ropes. Tazz hit one hell of a powerbomb but stalled in going for the cover. Tajiri flew off the ropes with a springboard elbow. Outside, Tazz ran Tajiri into the steps. Back inside, Tajiri hit the tarantula. Two stiff kicks were delivered by Tajiri, but Tazz absorbed them again and countered with an overhead suplex. Tajiri sprayed the green mist in Tazz's face and won!

Backstage, Matt Hardy expressed concern to Jeff over his match with Rob Van Dam. Suddenly, Van Dam blasted Matt with a chair and told Jeff he was next…

At WWF New York, Hardcore Holly ripped a WCW shirt off some kid.

WWF Hardcore Championship
Rob Van Dam d. Jeff Hardy to become the new champion
Jeff ran under Van Dam's legs to enter the ring, but RVD quickly took over. The two mat wrestled to their feet when Jeff dropkicked Van Dam from behind. Jeff hit a move called the "compacter" on RVD for a two count. RVD came back with a back flip for a two count.

Off the ropes, Van Dam hit another flipping splash move. The announcers pointed out this was the purest hardcore match ever. RVD jumped to the top rope and Jeff pushed him off into the safety barrier. Jeff went for the running security wall move but got caught and was thrown to the floor. In the crowd, RVD hit a back flip off a barrier. Off the apron, RVD jumped off and hit a spinning heel kick on Hardy, who was draped over the barrier. As Van Dam played to the crowd, Jeff hit a sunset flip from inside the ring out, in turn blasting RVD with a powerbomb. Jeff got a ladder from underneath the ring and climbed up to the very top. Van Dam ran into the ring and tipped the ladder over, sending Jeff to the floor. RVD got a chair and carried it over to Hardy, who used the ladder to pop Van Dam in the face with the chair. Jeff got the chair and hit RVD. The two battled up the entrance way when Van Dam hit the Van Damminator on Hardy, sending Jeff off the stage!

Jeff made it back to the ring and took more RVD punches. Van Dam dropkicked a chair into Jeff's face, causing him to bleed. Off the top, RVD missed about the hundredth flipping-type move of the match. Jeff hit a jawbreaker and missed a Swanton bomb. RVD placed the Hardcore title on Jeff's chest and launched off with a five star frogsplash. RVD wins.

Backstage, Vince told Kurt Angle to get in the right frame of mind for the main event. Vince told him to think about the red, white, and blue. Angle said "Enough of this Americana bullshit!" Angle said he was going to do this for him tonight.

Bra & Panties Match with Mick Foley as the special referee
Trish Stratus & Lita d. Stacy Keibler & Torrie Wilson
Foley stood in the ring awestruck as the ladies came to the ring. Torrie and Stacy used Foley as a shield to start off the match. Pretty much what you would expect to start; a bunch of wallowing around in the ring and slaps. Trish hit a double clothesline on the WCW girls and tagged in Lita. Torrie and Stacy argued over who should enter the ring. Lita tore Stacy's shirt off. Stacy tore Lita's shirt off. Torrie ripped of Trish's shirt. Trish ripped off Torrie's pants. Off went Torrie's shirt. Off went Stacy's pants. Lame.

Final pep talk for the WCWECW team…

Vince tried to motivate Steve Austin, but Austin would have none of it. He said he was here to whip ass, and that's the bottom line, because Stone Cold said so.

Inaugural Brawl
Team WCWECW (Booker T, Dallas Page, Dudley Boys & Rhyno) d. Team WWF (Steve Austin, Kurt Angle, Undertaker, Kane & Chris Jericho)
Before the introductions of the competitors, Paul Heyman, Shane, Stephanie, and Vince McMahon came to the ring. After DDP was introduced, Undertaker went right after him. The brawl began, with everyone into it on the outside. Steve Austin's music hit and he ran out, taking out everyone in his path. Team WWF held the firm advantage on the floor as both referees (a WWF and WCW ref) tried to gain control.

Austin and Rhyno went toe-to-toe. Austin hit a knee to Rhyno's midsection followed by a Thez press. Austin pounded the absolute hell out of Rhyno on the top rope with a superplex. Jericho tagged and hit knife-edge chops. Rhyno finally countered with a clothesline and tagged out to Booker T. Team WCWECW held Jericho in their corner for Booker to kick away at. Booker missed a side kick, allowing Jericho to bounce off the ropes with a bulldog. Rhyno ran in and caught a springboard dropkick. Jericho propelled off the middle rope with a missile dropkick. Angle tagged in and punched out Booker. The fan reaction for Angle was incredible. Booker sent Angle into the ropes and hit a spin kick.

D-Von entered and caught Angle with a flying shoulder tackle. Angle tagged to Kane, who sidewalk slammed D-Von. Page broke up a pinfall attempt. Kane went for a chokeslam but Buh Buh Ray broke it up. The Dudleys hit a modified version of the 3D on Kane, but couldn't capitalize. Up top, Kane knocked Buh Buh Ray to the mat with a clothesline. Undertaker became legal and went after Page. He legdropped Buh Buh and got a two count. 'Taker went old school on Buh Buh. UT cleaned Team WCWECW off the apron except for Page, who clobbered 'Taker, allowing Buh Buh to attack. Rhyno ran in and stomped at UT's midsection. Page tagged and laid in his beating.

Booker T went for a pin on a beaten 'Taker but couldn't get it. JR made fun of Booker's "spinaroonie." Austin tagged and poked Booker in the eye. Austin went for a stunner but Booker fell to the floor. Austin threw Booker into the crowd and suplexed him over the safety barrier. Jericho tagged and went for the Walls of Jericho. Page ran in and the move was broken. Jericho missed a lionsault and was hung out to dry over the top rope by Booker. Finally, Booker tagged out to D-Von, who laid in punches on Jericho's head. Team WCWECW took firm control until Jericho worked out of a Dudley double-team.

Angle tagged in and beat the Dudleys into each other. Buh Buh hit a sit down powerbomb on Angle, and D-Von followed with a leg drop. Undertaker saved his team from a loss. Team WCWECW took over for a long run, using quick tags and isolating Angle in their corner. Booker hit an axe kick and followed it with the spinaroonie. Page powerbombed Angle and Austin saved the match. Dudleys hit the low blow headbutt on Angle. Finally, Angle tagged Austin, but the referee didn't see it. While the ref argued with Austin and Team WWF, the WCW/ECW guys beat on Angle even more.

Finally, Undertaker had enough. He went after Page. Eventually, everyone jumped in and all hell broke loose. Rhyno gored Booker T by mistake. Undertaker chokeslammed Page. The WCW referee got in Undertaker's face, so 'Taker gave him the Last Ride! Poor Charles Robinson! The WWF referee rolled Robinson out of the ring.

'Taker and Page went into the crowd and continued their brawl. Kane ripped apart an announce table while a medic looked at Austin's knee. The Dudleys double-teamed Kane. Austin looked hurt. Dudleys sent Kane into the ringsteps and got a table. Austin was still down, this time with his knee brace loosened while a medic felt of his knee. Kane chokslammed D-Von through an announce table. Rhyno took Kane down. Buh Buh Ray and Rhyno double suplexed Kane through the other announce table.

Jericho launched off the ring apron and put Rhyno through a table! Now, everyone was down and out. The legal men still were Kurt Angle and Dallas Page. Angle was down outside the ring, but Page was nowhere to be found.

Booker T and Buh Buh showed signs of life and attacked Angle. Angle battled back with vengeance, hitting Olympic Slams on everyone. He put Booker in the ankle lock, and the referee took a bump. Everyone down again.

Vince got the WWF title belt from the timekeeper and slipped it to Angle! Shane got it before Angle could get to it and hammered Vince. Angle got up and busted Shane over the top rope. Angle slam on Booker! Angle lock on Booker, and he tapped out. Austin threw the referee into the ring. Austin attacked Angle and gave him the stunner. Austin put Booker T on top of Angle. 1-2-3. Austin turns WCW.

After the match, Austin celebrated with Paul Heyman, Stephanie and Shane McMahon. Everyone had beers.
WWF Invasion Results

INVASION PREVIEW
July 20, 2001

By Rick Scaia
WrestleLine/WrestleManiacs

At the end of the day, there isn't a whole lot about the wrestling business that most "smart" fans believe is really real. But the one thing that we ALWAYS believed in was the fact that different wrestling companies really did hate each other. They were at war for ratings, fans, and talent, and it wasn't just for show like the contrived battles we saw in the ring.

Which brings us to Sunday, where the three dominant wrestling companies of the 1990's are going to go to war... all on one show. Well, sort of...

The WWF, WCW, and ECW will all be represented at the aptly titled Invasion pay-per-view. But the truth is that they all exist under the banner of the WWF now. There is no genuine competition, none of that very real disdain that once existed between the companies, because outside of the context of WWF programming, neither WCW or ECW really has its own existence.

On the downside, this does mean that we'll have to suspend disbelief to really buy into the interpromotional feuding... but on the upside, it means that we'll get decisive finishes, unlike genuine interpromotional matches of the past where cheap, unsatisfying draws were the usual outcome as both companies tried to protect their own talent.

Despite the storylines, the only way Vince McMahon can lose in this affair is if fans just don't tune in. And from the looks of things the past two weeks, that's not what's happening. There are fans who avidly flipped back and forth between RAW and Nitro who are just curious to see the two companies now battling each other. There are loyalists who stuck with one show throughout who want to cheer that company on to victory. And then there's the ECW Factor, thrown in at the last instant, which has mobilized the ever-rabid faction of Extreme Mutants who may be in a minority, but who make up a very vocal and excitable minority. Interest is running undeniably high as we inch closer to the big PPV.

I may not be able to add to your interest, but hopefully, by running down the announced card for Sunday's show, I'll be able to help you maintain your excitement as we count down to Invasion.

STEVE AUSTIN, KURT ANGLE, UNDERTAKER, KANE, AND CHRIS JERICHO vs. BOOKER T, DALLAS PAGE, THE DUDLEY BOYZ, AND RHYNO (Inaugural Brawl)

It's that tried and true plot: an outside threat forces enemies to become allies. And so it is that Kurt Angle has found his inner bad-ass, drawing cheers from fans and respect from Taker, Kane, and Jericho. And more importantly, this is how we've ended up with the return of the "Original Recipe" Stone Cold Steve Austin; no more hugs and sing-alongs, cuz it's whoop-ass time.

All in the name of protecting the honor of the WWF against these invaders.

Booker T and DDP are the only former main eventers from the WCW camp to make the jump over to Shane McMahon's "New WCW." They are joined by three of the former main eventers from ECW's roster, the Dudleys and Rhyno. In fact, on this squad, you've got the joint WCW World and US Champ in Booker and you've got Rhyno, who was the joint ECW World and TV Champ when the company closed up shop. DDP is a former WCW Champ, while the Duds have double digit tag title reigns between ECW and the WWF.

It's a formidable fivesome, though the WWF team boasts some impressive qualifications of it's own. In addition to current champ Austin, there are three former WWF World champs on the team: Angle, Taker, and Kane. Though he's never held the big strap, Jericho's had his share of gold in the WWF, as well as being the only member of Team WWF to hold titles in both ECW and WCW.

In the absence of any hype to the contrary, I'm assuming this'll be a standard tag match to a single fall (not elimination style or anything fancy)... and though conventional wisdom suggests that a big 10-man tag match is likely to be a giant mess with little to no quality wrestling, the fact is that I'm holding out some hope. Thinking back to the classic 10-man main event of the 1997 Canadian Stampede pay-per-view, it is possible to have a great match with this many participants.

In fact, this roster of 10 workers may even be, top to bottom, more talented: no LODs or Jim Neidharts here... Steve Austin, of course, is the only common denominator between the two matches.

I'm cautiously optimistic that this main event will avoid the schmozzy fate of most 10-man matches: if the in-ring action is well-constructed and if the extracurriculars (you know Vince, Shane, and Stephanie McMahon -- as well as Paul Heyman -- are gonna have SOMEthing to say about the outcome of this match) are meshed in well, this could be a good one. Cross them fingers.

My Prediction: Every sensible bone in my body says that this is a custom-tailored opportunity for the WWF to go over and prove its superiority once and for all. But I think if this storyline is to continue, and if WCW/ECW guys are going to continue to have jobs, then they should get the win here. I don't know how, but I'm gonna go out on a limb and say that some kind of shocking upset swerve will end with Team WCW/ECW getting the win.

JEFF HARDY vs. ROB VAN DAM (Hardcore Title Match)

Does anyone really care what the story is here... something to do with RVD running in on a Hardy match on Monday, right?

What matters is that this could be a show-stealer. Could be. I qualify myself because I can imagine that no matter how good these two are, there may be problems putting together an instant classic only the third time they've ever been in the same ring together.

Still, I can't help but be excited by the prospect of Jeff Hardy and RVD in a match where anything goes. Highspots all over the building? Fine. Tables, ladders, chairs? Legal. This is essentially the same environment in which Van Dam had so many killer matches in ECW, which should help smooth his transition.

Four years ago, this match took place on RAW, and Jeff Hardy got squashed. In the years since, RVD grew into a key main event player in ECW, while Jeff Hardy opened eyes and dropped jaws with his high flying stunts. This time around, we aren't going to get a 4 minute showcase for RVD; this time, it's as close to a smart fan's wet dream as we get on this whole card. I'm thinking Jeff and RVD will deliver.

My Prediction: WCW/ECW has already won the Hardcore Title once... I think on Sunday, they'll do it again. RVD is one of the invading coalition's best prospects as a singles star, and I think he'll get the win over Hardy.

LITA/TRISH STRATUS vs. STACY KEIBLER/TORRIE WILSON (Bra and Panties Match)

Like the previous match, this is one where I don't think a lot of attention to back story is necessary. In fact, I don't think there was any: one night, they just sort of announced that this was going to be a match at Invasion, and since then, the divas have been at war.

Lita and Trish are not the most willing of partners, though their recent skirmishes against Stacy and Torrie have apparently brought them closer together. I don't think that'll be much more than a minor sidebar here. Kind of in the same way that I don't think that actual wrestling moves will be more than a minor sidebar in this match.

My Prediction: Hmmm, let's see.... four hot broads in a match that isn't over till two of 'em are stripped down to bras and panties? I think the real winners here will be the fans! Yeah! It's been too long since I've gotten to use that line! If I had to take a guess, I'd say Trish and Lita will get the win; Stacy and Torrie get stripped down in some sort of perverse "initiation" to the ways of the WWF (as if Torrie's creepy angle with Vince a few weeks back wasn't initiation enough!).

ACOLYTES vs. SEAN O'HAIRE/CHUCK PALUMBO

It's the WWF tag champs versus the WCW tag champs... but no titles on the line here. It's all about pride. Or something like that.

O'Haire and Palumbo were part of the earliest phases of the WCW invasion, targeting the Acolytes almost a month ago, when the APA was rallying the mid-card troops against the WCW'ers. Since then, the Acolytes managed to defeat the Dudleys for the WWF tag belts, adding further fuel to the fire.

This is actually a really good match-up, I think. The Acolytes are a convincing power team, which is what they'll need to go up against the sizeable duo of O'Haire and Palumbo. O'Haire's also a singles star in the making, with a great moveset and tremendous agility for a guy his size. To some extent, you might say the same thing about Bradshaw, who has been noticeably improved in the ring since dropping some pounds earlier this year.

My Prediction: The APA get the win... O'Haire and Palumbo are still "prospects," while Bradshaw and Faarooq are established stars already; there are other places on the card where WCW/ECW victories make more sense.

EDGE/CHRISTIAN vs. LANCE STORM/MIKE AWESOME

This is a feud over use of the word "awesome." It doesn't sound all that compelling when you put it down on paper like this, but somehow, with Edge and Christian's goofy charm, it works.

E&C didn't much cotton to the arrival of Mike Awesome, since they and they alone reek of awesomeness. After E&C helped Jeff Hardy beat Awesome for the Hardcore Title, we found ourselves on course for this tag match. Awesome is back teaming with his old Team Canada partner, Lance Storm, for the occasion (even though the Team Canada gimmick was in WCW, and now both are representing ECW).

Lotsa talent in the ring for this one. If Storm can continue to get solid heel heat with some pre-match mic work and if the fans are fully buying into E&C as babyfaces, this one could be a super contest.

My Prediction: I'll call this one for the ECW guys... perhaps the latent dissension between Edge and Christian resurfaces long enough for Storm and Awesome to steal the win? Something like that...

TAJIRI vs. TAZZ

Tajiri is rapidly becoming a crowd favorite, by the sounds of things. Outside of the ring, his goofy character is making people laugh. In the ring, his stiff kicks and incredible offense are convincing people he's for real.

It was the outside of the ring goofiness that led to this match: Tajiri was sitting in on color commentary, a move not appreciated by Tazz, who vacated that color man position on SmackDown! when he defected to ECW. Tazz attacked Tajiri and now we find ourselves with this match-up.

Tajiri will no doubt be seconded by William Regal, which might give him an edge. Then again, Tazz is riding high on the strength of his appearances on "Tough Enough"; he's been reborn as the bad-ass he used to be back in ECW. But he IS in ECW now. I mean... oh, nevermind, I'm starting to confuse myself.

My Prediction: Even with Regal and the blinding green mist, I don't see Tajiri getting the win over the Tough Enough star. Another one for the invaders.

X-PAC vs. BILLY KIDMAN

Again, we've got two champions here, but no titles on the line. X-Pac is the WWF's Light Heavyweight champ, while Kidman holds WCW's Cruiserweight Title. With no gold on the line, this is just a straight-up match to see who is the best of the under 225 lbs. crowd.

Starting with a series of matches against Eddie Guerrero earlier this year, X-Pac's been looking better in the ring than he has in years, adding back in some of the aerial arsenal that had been on hiatus, supplementing the wide array of kicks and martial arts stuff he'd focused on. Kidman is an all around solid performer, too, who has spent the last few years adding to his arsenal so as not to be perceived as nothing but a high flyer.

Both these guys have plenty of ways to impress us, so it'll be interesting to see which ones they use. Also interesting: despite the de facto babyface status of every WWF'er, X-Pac might be one guy who continues to get heel heat. If the fans don't want to get behind Kidman (because of his WCW membership), then that might leave us in the unfortunate position of having the crowd sitting on their hands, not cheering either guy. That could get ugly.

My Prediction: I want this one to go to Kidman, but I think I'll pick X-Pac, if for no other reason than it's as good an excuse as any to drop CRZ's name when I mention the old "X-Pac never jobs in singles matches" heuristic.

EARL HEBNER vs. NICK PATRICK

As a wrestling match, this'll suck. But for whatever reason, the confrontations between these two in the last couple weeks have drawn huge cheers. Even if it's just a few minutes of sloppy rolling around, punching, and kicking, I have a feeling it'll at least be a few sloppy minutes where the crowd is enjoying itself.

One question: who officiates the officials?

Another question: can we get Joey Styles to come in just for one match so he can screech "REF FIGHT! REF FIGHT!"?

My Prediction: Earl Hebner gets the win. This is probably his one chance to do something like this, and he deserves to get his hand raised. Hey, maybe use the old Twin Hebner ploy to confuse and confound Patrick!

EXTRAS?

That's only eight announced matches, and Jim Ross hinted yesterday that the final card would probably feature 10 or 11... so some things'll be added before Sunday. Topping the list of talents not currently booked are Raven, Big Show, and IC Champ Albert.

In addition to looking for a few additional matches to be added, I think there are two major issues that bear a quick mention here, as they might impact either the Invasion PPV or the on-going Invasion storyline.

First is SmackDown's revelation that Shane and Stephanie McMahon sold their shares of the WWF to finance this Invasion. What I want to know is: who did they sell to? That's 50% interest in the WWF now floating around out there unclaimed, which could be used as a major storyline twist. If the same buyer took both Shane and Steph's shares, that will NOT sit well with Mr. McMahon.

The second issue is the impending return of The Rock. We all know that he's featured prominently in ads for SummerSlam. But he'll be back before then. And when he comes back, we're going to need an explanation why. Is he going to circumvent his WWF suspension by defecting to WCW/ECW? Is something dire going to happen to make Vince so desperate that he revokes the suspension and brings the Rock back to the WWF?

Hey, maybe the two issues are intertwined: maybe big shot movie star Rock is so wealthy now that he had enough money to buy out Shane and Steph and he'll just reinstate himself? Nah, nevermind... that's just silly talk off the top of my head.

In any case, those are some of the extracurriculars to think about as we get closer to Sunday's Invasion pay-per-view. As always you can come on back to WrestleLine in the 11pm (eastern) hour for my full match-by-match recap. Then on Monday, we'll add more coverage of the event, including Scott's detailed PPV Rant and more.

EXTRAS?
