Wow, I wish time was an illusion, but it truly flies!

I came to the site to play around with some scripts and noticed anything that wasn't straight html was broken. It's pretty obvious technology keeps advancing by leaps and bounds, but at least one thing hasn't changed much: I still work a high stress job for too many hours per week and because many tech jobs are salary, I still don't get paid for overtime! Yay, capitalism!

Anyway, I fixed up some of the php scripts I built long ago and upgraded the newer forum to the latest. There are still a lot of template errors here and there, but it kinda sorta works. The old one still doesn't load and I'm not sure I want to get it running. Eh, maybe I will. We'll see.

I guess this is a 20 year anniversary for the Holy Buffalo!

Bwahaha! I decided to look at the old site and noticed AmandaKaT came back to reminisce in 2010. Her post made me nostalgic and inspired me to upgrade the forums...

I looked up some of the current systems and decided I liked MyBB's look and features. I also liked that it uses MySQL to store data (I'm a fan), had a decent plug-in system and that it's all open source. Yay!

Getting messages from this old hacked up board into MyBB was going to be a challenge and at first I thought about writing some PHP scripts to read the files and insert records into the database. Luckily, I found an upgrade path already designed for me.

What I did was install an old version of phpbb that was happily sitting on the sourceforge phpbb site, waiting for me to download. Then I found a step-by-step guide with scripts that could read and parse all the ikonboard files and insert thread, posts, user records into the phpbb database. The scripts weren't perfect, but after I made some modifications and several database purges and re-runs later, they finally ran cleanly. So far so good.

Now I was even more fortunate that MyBB had a merge system that could read the phpbb database and insert all the records into the MyBB database. This part ran very cleanly; just a few clicks and everything was imported. All of this was accomplished in a couple days after my consistently long days at work.

Now I tasked myself to use the template and theme system of MyBB to re-create a "classic" Holy Buffalo theme. This was the most tedious and difficult part because I needed to review all the different templates and modify the HTML and CSS by hand. I didn't copy everything exactly as I hoped to make some improvements to the look, but I think I've come pretty close to capturing the old feel. Most of the lingering problems lie with the images as JuggleFoe always came to my rescue in creating the artwork for the old forums.

The last thing I did was some cleanup on the threads and posts since there were some artifacts left in the records during the conversion. I've fixed most of what I could find with some update statements against the database. I've been building databases for the last 10 years, so this part was easy!

I'm pretty happy with the result thus far and will continue to work on the forum settings. I'm also glad that there's a database behind all this because now I can update some of the older scripts to read from it and build some new data-driven pages for the site.

- Added some javascript to the top menu to allow loading multiple frames on a single link.

I had no idea how broken the scripts were in firefox, so I did a fair amount of work on different scripts to make them work again. I guess that's what happens when browser technology improves. I learned a lot of new code today!

Anyone that has an email address knows what spam is. Why do we have to put up with these fucking idiots?! If I wanted viagra or penis enlargement I'd do some research to buy it, I don't need you fuckers to send me some lame email about viagra every god-damned day of the year!

I disabled forum registration cause I'm tired of bogus users registering on here so they could attempt to spam on the forum too, as if we don't get enough spam in our lives.

If you're here you must realize the new URL is http://www.holybuffalo.net It was a .com but I let that expire despite the many reminder emails flooding the registered mail account that I hadn't checked in 6+ months. Whoops!

I could have let it expire for good, but I guess I can be sentimental. Besides, there are a couple of projects I had in mind so it may get more use someday.

This may seem sort of crazy and that's because it is, but I looked at some of the code and attempted to clean things up a bit. This is due to seeing a couple of visitor registrations recently. Not sure what's causing them. It did make me check the register script which had some annoying bugs.

- Fixed an issue with the avatar viewer in the register script displaying an error message instead of displaying the avatar.

- Fixed several graphical or layout problems in the register script.

- Many miscellaneous HTML fixes to post, topic, and forums scripts.
