Don't worry about it Alpha. It's not whether you understand English or not. I was confused for a time also. I don't call my girlfriend 'baby' often if at all.
It's just a different term than you or I are probably used to. I usually call my girlfriend 'dookie' so if I was talking about "Yea, I took my dookie with me on a road trip to visit my parents the other day" I don't think anyone would really understand what the hell I was talking about.
