But since it involves super fireworks, it works for me. I've just come back from the park (it's 2320 now), where we had the usual 4th of July party...Yes, we celebrate this every year, with hundreds and hundreds of people in the park watching fireworks, having fun...Does this happen in other countries too? Hey, you non-Americans out there, tell me! But the fireworks were great, so I can't complain...And the crowd, very many indeed. Ballons, flags, etc...

What the hell?

Dude, that makes NO sense at all.  I'm at work; everyone else is at work, nobody here gives a toss about July 4th, and I live less than an hour away from the damn country, as opposed to being on the other side of the world.

BTW, we celebrated Canada Day (well, I went to a friend's birthday and then got drunk and danced my ass off at the local industrial club night) on Sunday.

-- Posted by Amor Fati on 1:36 pm on July 4, 2001

Yeah, I thought so. I mean it's not like it was like this the entire day, but since seven or eight pm people started gathering in the parc and by the time we got there the party was already going on...

i oughta' get drunk off my ass on boxing day sometime.

here in chicago we celebrate mexican and puerto rican independance days, simply because of the large presence of the respective nationalities...

-- Posted by Amor Fati on 1:48 pm on July 4, 2001

I don't even know if we celebrate our own National day with all this fuss. It's in winter, so fireworks would look strange...

-- Posted by JuggleFoe on 2:16 pm on July 4, 2001

i would almost think that would be more beautiful.

-- Posted by Inertia on 2:32 pm on July 4, 2001

I think so, too.

The Mexican and Puerto Rican holidays make sense, but I don't get the 4th in Romania.  Is there any specific, tangible connection to the states that Romania has that other European countries don't?

-- Posted by JuggleFoe on 2:45 pm on July 4, 2001

face it dude, people will take any reason they can find to party their asses off.

"humans: the party species"...

-- Posted by Inertia on 3:07 pm on July 4, 2001

Good point.  Some friends of mine, who are of completely European stock, have started to celebrate Cinqo de Mayo annually.  They've also been known to observe the lesser known Quatro, Ocho, and Nuevo de Mayo as well.

-- Posted by JuggleFoe on 3:23 pm on July 4, 2001

heh.

it's like that here, with fireworks.

i've heard people blowin' stuff up every day since puerto rican indipendence day.

it's "fireworks season", don'tcha' know.

;)

4th of July
isn't that when u get all patriotic and stuff?

my birthday is the 3rd of July, and that's good enough reason for me to drink and blow things up :)

-- Posted by JuggleFoe on 10:11 pm on July 4, 2001

all patriotic for what? i'm partially native american.

-- Posted by Amor Fati on 1:50 am on July 5, 2001

Inertia, the connection is that everybody here wants to go there, that's still "the promised land" for most of us here.Still the mighty-nation-whose-example-we-have-to-follow.

Well, I supose I should hate 4th July. But, I dont give a shit, we dont celebrate it in England, cos it would be like Jews celebrating Hitlers birthday.

Um.  No.

No it wouldn't.

Not at all.

I can't possibly think of a more inappropriate comparison.

isn't it Independance Day or is that something else?
*shrug*
I doesn't matter to me either way.
No need to explain.

-- Posted by Inertia on 12:21 pm on July 6, 2001

Jul 4th is Independance Day.  I think what Foe was referring to was the fact that his Native American heritage (read: Indian, in less sensitive language) makes him somewhat loathe to celebrate the "independance" of a "country" founded on the colonialist imperialism of a bunch of people (the Puritans) who were kicked out of their own country (England) 'cos no one there could stand them.

In Australian terms: why would the aboriginal people of Australia give a fuck about the day on which Australia officially gained indpendance from England?

...Or am I completely off the mark, foe?

-- Posted by JuggleFoe on 4:02 pm on July 6, 2001

yeah. you're off.

i'm just a prick and i like to throw my heritage around to make others feel guilty.

;)
