I should see the version made in '59. The one I saw was the TV mini-series made in 2000. On the Beach tells of a world that was wreacked by a total nuclear war, with only Australia left alive, and even the people there are counting the days before the cloud of radiation comes in and finishes them off. However, there's a scientist who says that a 1000 people could be relocated to northern hemisphere where there sohuld be low enough radiation levels, according to his calculations. A single american sub, that survived the war, is sent to investigate the situation up north. Truly a touching movie. The first one to bring a tear to my eye. I heartily recommend seeing this one.
